4 Natural Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Natural Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Acne vulgaris is a common and often chronic skin condition that results in pimples. Doctors can prescribe special creams and antibiotics for acne, but a lot of the creams they prescribe and, I’m talking from experience here, can leave your face feeling pretty sore, itchy and full of red patches. There are natural ways to get rid of acne, which a lot of suffers swear by; they are definitely worth giving a go.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is an essential oil that is produced from the leaves of the melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia. Throughout history, tea tree oil has been used as an antiseptic; it was even used by the Aborigines, who used the leaves of the plant to treat cuts and wounds.

Studies have been done on the effects of tea tree oil and acne, with one particular study A comparative study of tea-tree oil versus benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne, finding that a 5% tea-tree oil solution worked just as well as 5% benzoyl peroxide, a prescribed cream for acne.

What makes tea tree oil one of the best natural ways to get rid of acne is that it contains some powerful properties. It is an antimicrobial, which essentially means that tea-tree oil can kill bad bacteria and prevent it from returning. Tea tree oil also is also a cicatrisant, a property that can help scar tissue to form, which helps with the blemishes acne often leaves behind.

There are currently many acne products available including face creams and cleansers which contain tea tree oil, but if you want to make your own, then you’ll need to buy the actual essential oil.

While it is usually inadvisable to use essential oils directly on the skin as they are considered to be too harsh, many people find that they are able to use tea tree oil neat. If you do want to do this, I would advise doing a patch test first, which is to test it on a small area of skin, leaving it for 24 hours, to see if your skin reacts.

However, for precaution,  I would say to start of by diluting it. A lot of people find that aloe vera oil (we’ll get to that later) works perfectly with tea tree oil, though you can also use water.

Instructions

Wash hands and face thoroughly before you begin.

  1. Mix 2 parts tea tree oil with 9 parts aloe vera oil or water.
  2. Use a cotton ball or Q-tip and apply directly to the spot.
  3. You can leave it on though some people prefer to wash it off after about 20 minutes.

Note: if you use aloe vera oil, it’s probably to store the mixture so you have it ready for quick use.

 Epsom Salt

Natural Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Epsom salt is packed full of amazing properties

If you’ve never heard of Epsom salt before, then you are missing out. Epsom salt is no ordinary salt, it is actually magnesium sulfate. Epsom salt was discovered in Epsom, Surrey, and has since been praised for its healing properties.

Epsom salts are recommended for a range of conditions, including muscle pain relief and constipation. While there have not been any scientific studies on the effectiveness of Epsom salt as an acne treatment, there is loads of anecdotal evidence that suggests it actually works.

Epsom salt is a great natural way to get rid of acne as it makes an amazing exfoliating skin scrub; this will help to remove dead skin cells, which are a hotbed for acne-causing bacteria. Epsom salt also has a drying effect, which is especially good if you suffer from oily skin. Furthermore, the drying effect will also take the moisture from the bacteria that it needs to survive, which will hopefully kill it.

Instructions

  1. Wash hands and face before you begin
  2. Add to tablespoons of Epsom salt to a cup of warm water
  3. Wait until it has dissolved and then give it a stir
  4. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and place it on the affected areas
  5. Leave for up to 20 minutes, then wash off.

Neem

Neem is an evergreen tree native to India and the Indian subcontinent, where they use nearly every part of the tree for culinary, medicinal or other purposes. The main parts of the tree used are the leaves, the fruit. and seeds – the seeds of which are processed into neem oil. Neem leaves and neem oil is used as a traditional alternative medicine in India for various conditions, including respiratory disorders, malaria, and acne.

Neem makes an effective acne treatment because it contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which will get rid of acne-causing bacteria and prevent it from coming back. It will also effectively reduce any redness and irritation associated with acne.

There are three methods to choose from. You may also want to try out a neem soap for acne.

Remember to wash your hands and face before any of these methods.

Instructions

 Neem leaves

  1. Wash a few neem leaves, add them to water and bring to boil
  2. Once the leaves have softened and the water begins to turn green, take them off boil
  3. Leave the water to cool down until it is warm
  4. Dip a cotton ball into the solution and then apply to face

 Neem oil

Note: Although it is unlikely to cause a reaction, it is probably a good idea to do a patch test first to see how your skin reacts with the oil

  1. Use a cotton ball or cotton swab to apply the neem oil directly on the affected areas
  2. Repeat every night for a few weeks

 Neem face mask

  1. Add 1 tsp. plain yogurt, 1 tsp. gram flour and 2 tsp.  neem powder into a small bowl

Aloe Vera

Natural Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Aloe vera is very good for skin care

The gel from the aloe plant – the clear jelly-like substance extracted from inside the leaf- has been used as a natural topical treatment for centuries. Today, you can find it in various cosmetic products; it is usually the main ingredient in after sun products because of its soothing nature.  Aloe Vera makes a good acne product as it contains anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that will help to reduce the redness and bacteria associated with acne.

There are debates about the effectiveness of aloe vera as a treatment for acne, so I suggest mixing it with a more powerful product, like tea tree oil.

😉 Tips

As well as using natural ways to get rid of acne, there are certain practices that you should always follow!

  • Try not to constantly touch your face, because if you consider the amount of things we touch, touching your face will only spread bacteria and may potentially lead to a breakout.
  • Regularly wash your pillowcase to prevent bacteria building up and spreading to your face.
  • Ladies, it is so important to wash off your makeup before bed. Everyone struggles with this one, including me. It is especially difficult if you’ve had a late night and the last thing you want to do is stand there scrubbing it off. However, leaving your makeup on will, not only clog your pores but will also allow the environmental bacteria collected outside, to seep into your skin.

Final Thoughts…

I know how difficult having acne can be, I have the more than the occasional bout of spots. It is even more difficult when what the doctors prescribe only irritates your face, leaving you with not only spots but red, itchy patches everywhere. Hopefully, like other sufferers who have tried out these natural ways to get to get rid of acne, you too should find some relief.
